
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 61
(By Mr. Speaker, Mr. Kiss and Delegate Mahan)
Requesting the West Virginia Division of Geological and Economic
Survey, in cooperation with West Virginia University
Institute for History and Technology and Industrial
Archeology and the Smithsonian Institution to conduct a
study to determine the status and costs identifying,
locating, purchasing, repairing or reconstructing all
sulphur springs in West Virginia.

whereas, The Legislature of the State of West Virginia
supports tourism, historical and cultural development; and

whereas, The Legislature is sensitive to the preservation of
particular assets including all sulphur springs; and

whereas, The West Virginia Division of Geological and
Economic Survey is aware that there are several existing springs
in West Virginia which should be purchased except those already
owned by the State of West Virginia and the White Sulphur Springs
in Greenbrier County; and

whereas, It is not the intent of the Legislature to any way
coerce any person(s) who are unwilling to sell their springs; and

whereas, It is the intent of the Legislature to urge the West Virginia Division of Geological and Economic Survey in
cooperation with West Virginia University Institute for History
of Technology and Industrial Archeology and the Smithsonian
Institution to conduct a study to determine the status of all
sulphur springs and the costs to complete the program; and

whereas, The Legislature requests that the appropriate,
local, state and federal agencies assist by providing available
information for this program; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the West Virginia Division of Geological and Economic
Survey in cooperation with West Virginia University Institute for
History of Technology and Industrial Archeology, the Smithsonian
Institution and relevant local, state and federal agencies are
urged to conduct a study to determine the status and costs of
identifying, locating, purchasing, repairing or reconstructing
all sulphur springs in West Virginia; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the West Virginia Division of
Geological and Economic Survey is requested to report to the
Legislature by last day of December 2001, the results of the
cooperative efforts requested herein, including all known
available sources of funding, and drafts of any Legislation
necessary to facilitate the project.
